[Ongoing Research]

	Corporeal historiographies by hijadelacoca*
Material investigations into bodies as unstable archives. Through textile translations of medical and diagnostic imagery, this research examines systems of classification, visibility, and failure. Stitching operates as a gesture of interference, producing tactile records that resist clarity and remain unresolved.

PROJECTS ↛

TEJER LO QUE NO SE VE ↓

This series transforms medical images—ultrasounds, X-rays, gynecological scans—into textile interpretations of what clinical

gazes classify or pathologize. Through embroidery, organs, cavities, and tissues are retraced on translucent surfaces. Each

stitch slows down technological immediacy, opening cracks where silence, wounds, and the force of the unsaid emerge.

EPICRISIS ↓

N.TO THE SOUTH ↓This work transforms autopsy reports of victims killed by state violence in Peru into monumental textile memorials. By stitching forensic data onto fabric, it exposes the brutality masked by official narratives. It honors the victims’ bodies as archives of truth, demanding memory and justice in the face of political repression.

— “ In mid-2018 I designed a 'pussy riot' style protest mask, which will show the case of a woman (Juana Mendoza) victim of feminicide.
With this mask I annulled my face, my identity, which serves as a blank canvas to enunciate (sewing, painting , embroidery) an event that permeated me in a significant way and that the press media in my country initially did not cover properly as it was considered irrelevant. I called ‘Por Juana Mendoza’. (To Juana Mendoza)..”

Feminicide In Latinoamérica it is a national crime when we are killed because of the collapse of the system and impunity.

That gender violence is visible in the discourse of government authorities, agencies and media: Juana Mendoza is a victim of female murder by gender discrimination of male violence, her face is ours, we are all Juana Mendoza demanding justice.

We are murdered for gender reasons. Due to the lack of a decisive and forceful equality and education policy with a gender approach, a specialized judicial system and a public budget free from neoliberal economic constraints, the State cannot avoid this situation according to No. 30364. Law No. 1 and the National Plan to Combat Gender Violence 2016-2021, which covers women throughout the country.

Censored Embroidery (Series) Photo Embroidery 11x9’2018

“... I’ve always have been fascinated the human body, human corporalities, nudity as pure element of innocence/ escence. so i started explore mine, taking and publishing nude photography portraits of myself, my account was shut down..”.I was forced to use collage and embroidery, an element typically linked to the feminine, as a technique and tool to censor my pieces, since the naked body was censored in social networks to advertise it. In this exploration i’ve Created a serie of pieces that lately I named: ‘censored Embroidery’."censored embroidery" censors the body in an opposite act, as it highlights the nudity that is meant for censorship with a color block as a main element that compose the nudity of image.I see my artwork ‘Censored Embroidery ‘ it's a contemporary view of how to apply restrictions using typical embroidery techniques with a new meaning. In that way I start to censorship nudity to publish it using embroidery and images of nudity in mags as #bobmizer and documental photographic record. I can say that my artwork with embroidery is related to identity, and to my own identity, to show it or hide it, to exhibit myself, to remember, to remember with my own memory, with the memory of other people who are the ones who build my story”, In some artworks, meaning of censored face, is an analogy of consumption of naked bodies that lends itself to anonymous and clandestine consumption in social networks if it has no identity. ‿︵‿︵ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ・❉・ ʚ˚̣̣̣͙ɞ‿︵‿︵Censored Embroidery is part of Cultural Heritage Collection of MAMI Museum.Published in Artistres Residency by WET Prod.

Considering the intimate link between woman and nature and nature and art, I decided to embroider the photograph of this felled and mutilated tree with the design in the form of flowers. The photograph was taken at the Hermilio Valdizán Hospital, a psychiatric facility for low-income people, where my mother was hospitalized and has received treatment for the last 20 years. This embroidered work, gestated from the personal experience of a constant struggle in an environment marked by the fragility of mental health and environmental devastation, stands as an act of resistance, because despite its mutilation, the tree is still standing. To embroider on its wounded skin is to affirm its capacity for rebirth. It is a reminder that, even in the darkest of times, beauty can emerge as a delicate bud between the cracks of suffering.
In every stitch, in every flower, a story of perseverance resonates, in every cell of life, even in the most desolate and forgotten places. By imaginatively embroidering its flowering, the stitched threads transcend the desolation of suffering from mental illness in such precarious contexts. This is how we find the connection between human fragility and the possibility of nature's regeneration, the embroidery becomes a symbol of hope, of recovery, a declaration of the beauty that emerges from adversity and oblivion to recover, to bloom again. It is an artwork that I linked to mental health and nature, also named “when third world war ended” about Whitney Houston’s song and exhibited in ‘My Love is Your Love’ linked to the meaning of this song and edited many times thanks to all workshops I attended, like TransHumanxs in Aula School of Photography, Ecuador and Identidades en Movimiento by URGE, Argentina. Exhibited first time in "My love is your Love", Every Women Biennial (EWB) in London in Copeland at Copeland Gallery, Parks and Co., where she was selected because the Embroidered photo shows the resurgence of a body of mutilated nature, as an analogy to the own battles in which each individual is involved individually, the image was taken in the Mental Sanatorium Hermilio Valdizan, Lima, Peru.

Women sustain the pandemic
  Digital Photography

2021Under visual sovereignty, we can also generate images of what it means to represent other bodies, giving them humanity through objects, to construct them more imaginatively from our own cultural, everyday and domestic cosmogony. I allow myself to use the visual as a way of explaining a non-verbalized fact. We women carry the burden of the pandemic on our shoulders through domestic labor, an unpaid labor that expands to become an exhausting and perpetual duty during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both mothers and non-mothers nurture and care for our families in the kitchen, a space traditionally associated with the feminine. The subject-object relationship goes beyond functional use, utensils are cared for and protected from a maternal position, as an extension of our own essence, with which we nourish ourselves, being an integral part of the family.I highlight this episode of daily life through a technique similar to the one I use when intervening photographs with embroidery. I decontextualize the image, wrapping it in threads and adding surreal elements that highlight, in this case, the meaning of the food, who prepares it and the interactions that are woven around it. Women sustain the pandemic, for where there is no food, there is no life. From this creative process called "Women sustain the pandemic, 2021", come the photographs of self-portraits and the series of textile and fibre sculptures "Where there is no food, there is no life" made during the residency at BICAPLATAFORMA OCCUPATION WR 3, Brazil. Hijadelacoca, Series: Women Sustain the Pandemic, 2021. See BICA PLATAFORMA OCUPAÇÃO WR#3Women sustain the pandemic > hijadelacocaAs mothers, daughters, and sisters, mothers shoulder the responsibility of taking care of family members and working in domestic spaces in the home, kitchen, and other places associated with motherhood and maternity. Hija reveals the social divide between how women are portrayed as individuals whose places are merely within the confines of the home, their marriage, and motherhood, and their roles as domestic free labours. The subject-object relationship in Hija’s textile works goes beyond the utility function of the objects themselves, acting as an extension of women’s maternal position in society–to protect, feed, and care for the entire family. Textil Sculpture

2019

I would like to share my stitching with arpilleria applications of the symbol of the group of activists "Somos 2074 y Muchas Más"(we are 2074 and many more), which makes visible and seeks justice for the cases of forced sterilizations that occurred during the dictatorship of Alberto Fujimori. + More than 2,700 victims registered by the Peruvian State and more than 20 years of waiting for justice.

The name “hijadelacoca” condenses an Andean ritual genealogy. Of Aymara descent through her paternal line, her great-grandfather, originally from Huancané, Puno, belonged to a lineage of coca leaf readers, an ancestral practice of divination and spiritual guidance. This knowledge, transmitted to her father, extends to other southern Andean rituals —mesadas, healing baths, and limpias— that intertwine cure and collective energy. The artist acknowledges herself as an apprentice of this living tradition under her father’s guidance, also present in the celebrations of the Virgin of the Rosary of Huancané. By naming herself “hijadelacoca,” she reinscribes a heritage of multiple immaterial cultural resistanceswithin her practice.
